Hi everyone, I am Anna. I am a mother of two young children, a 12 year old boy and a girl that just turned 10. Both are very creative and active in the online gaming world, especially on Minecraft. When they first started playing Minecraft, I knew nothing about it and didn’t think that there would be anything to worry about. After some online research, I found out that plenty of cyberbullying occurs on multiplayer games, including Minecraft, and that many children fall victim to griefers and trolls. I am sure there are plenty of parents out there, like myself, that had no clue what griefers and trolls were. A griefer according to Wikipedia is, “a player in a multiplayer video game who deliberately irritates and harasses other players within the game, using aspects of the game in unintended ways… including cursing, cheating, stealing and unreasonable killing.” A troll according to Wikipedia is, “a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.” After reading about these online threats I decided that there is more that I can do to become involved with my children’s online safety. I want my children to enjoy their gaming and don’t want them falling victim to these cyberbullies. Follow my blog to learn about my journey and how you too can encourage online safety among your children.
